Great observations, but there is another factor at play here: India is obsessed with the English language. As a former English colony, only the rich and privileged in India had access to English education.

English is looked upon as a language of the privileged, and the well-educated. How you speak/write English determines how educated people consider you to be, sadly.

You will often see Indian immigrants using large, complicated words that even native English speakers don't. It comes from a place of insecurity *and* pride, strangely. Hence, there is a lot more emphasis in Indian families on learning the English language (grammar, spelling etc.) really well. When I was growing up, my grandfather would ask me to watch the BBC, and read Jeeves and Wooster, to improve my language skills. To this day, I care way too much about spelling, and cringe when I read misspelled sentences at work! My American friends don't really care as much about spelling correctly because they have none of this cultural baggage. :)
