I loved reading this piece!
My elderly paternal grandfather lived in Chennai, India all his life, and used to take the bus to his favorite electronics stores till he turned 85. He experienced human connection, creative satisfaction, and was able to indulge his love for mobile phones, and other electronic goods only after he turned 70 because he had led a hard life until then.
He lived with my parents, and I witnessed him becoming a teenager as he grew older. Despite his poor eyesight, he used to take the bus almost everyday to a bookstore, then to a cafe to drink “rose milk”, talk to his buddies at a local electronics goods store, and take the bus back home late in the evening. Of course, it helped that Indian cities are densely populated, and he could rely on people to help him if he fell, or was unwell.
